MOTS-c and mitonuclear signalling

How a mitochondrial-encoded peptide became a tool for studying cellular stress and metabolic signalling.

MOTS-c is encoded within the mitochondrial 12S rRNA region and is studied as a mitochondrial-derived signalling peptide. Early work connected it with metabolic regulation in experimental models.

Later research examined movement of MOTS-c to the nucleus during metabolic stress and its relationship with adaptive gene expression. These mechanistic observations remain dependent on the experimental system.

Longevity language can overstate this evidence. The appropriate conclusion is that MOTS-c is relevant to mitonuclear communication research, not that a supplied material has demonstrated a human anti-ageing effect.
